TOUR DESCRIPTION

This day tour will introduce you to the Mediterranean way of eating, entertaining, and living. We will pick you up with our van and driver early in the morning from your place and drive you to Lavrio port, where you will take a ferry to Kea. After one hour or so you will arrive in Korissia, the port town of Kea island. From there you will head towards the country house of award-winning and internationally renowned cookbook author, Aglaia Kremezi. She gardens, cooks, writes (also won the Julia Child award) and teaches Greek cooking to travelers.

She and her husband will welcome you and show you around their gorgeous garden and talk to you about Mediterranean plants, herbs trees and fruits. Costas, her husband, is the one taking care of those gardens and loves to BBQ fish and pork chops. He makes the most fiery and delicious penne with home-grown chilies and whatever else he finds in the fridge –smoky Kean sausage, capers, leftover shredded cabbage, wild greens, etc.

Then the cooking hands-on cooking class will start. You will use seasonal products, most of which from the same Kea island and even from the house garden. So, according to the time of the year and Aglaia’s inspiration you may learn to:

  • make dolmas, (stuffed grape leaves) for meze;
  • prepare and cook artichokes;
  • make stuffed vegetables, to serve with lamb OR kid roasted in the wood-fired oven;
  • make traditional breads, plain and stuffed;
  • fry zucchini blossomsand other vegetables, and make skordalia (garlic spread) with almonds;
  • roll phyllo pastry and make pites (pies) – crunchy cheese pie, spinach and garden herb pie, etc.;
  • grill fish and more.

The cooking will be followed by a long Mediterranean lunch with dishes prepared in class and some other delicacies. After lunch we will drive you up hill to quaint Ioulis-Chora, the capital of the island. There you will be able to stroll its picturesque alleys and then go on a short hike along an old trail leading to oak forests. You will have the chance to visit the ancient stone-built smiling lion, symbol of the island before making your way back to the port, Korissia. From there you will take the ferry back to Lavrio, and from there reach Athens later in the evening.

NOTES

Program and price can vary according to mutual specific arrangements. Our tour leaders speak many different languages. A comfortable outfit is recommended. The cookings and food tastings change according to seasonality, and take place in a villa with garden near a beach.

Single individuals are welcome to book the tour as well. If by the date of the tour minimum participation requirement is not met, a new date will be suggested or the client is free to cancel with full refund of the paid amount applying. If more people sign in for this tour on the specific date, partial refund may apply if the corresponding rate for shared group tour is lower than the paid amount at the time of booking.
