Athens by the Glass is an Athens wine city-break that will make you love Greek wine. We will make you experience this rapidly increasing social and customary phenomenon – Athens teems with wine bars and restaurants -, and a booming exporting industry.
The Greek wine culture has been associated with Retsina wine for many years, and often to poor quality one. This has profoundly changed in the last decades and now Greece features a vibrant wine scene with boutique producers that excel in producing highly praised wine with international awards. Particularly interesting for the foreign visitor are the outstanding efforts in revitalizing and experimenting with the endless local grape varieties, that reflect Greece’s multitude of landscapes, geologic formations and microclimates.
Athens By the Glass city-break harmoniously blends this immersion into the Greek wine tradition and today’s wine scene with explorations in and around Athens plus some free time to see the main attraction of the Greek capital. The program includes visits to selected wineries in the Attica region and a day excursion in the region of Nemea in the Peloponnese, arguably the top wine producing area in the country.
Assyrtiko, Athiri, Savvatiano, Roditis, Xinomavro, Agiorgitiko are all grape varieties you may be unaware of now but that you will taste and appreciate during your stay. Some of them you will love for life and will surprise your wine-aficionados friends back home.
