Athens is blessed with a terrific coastline that few tourists know or get to enjoy. This is a custom family tour that mixes sightseeing, eco and educational elements as well as fun moments, in the setting of the fantastic Athens Riviera. We will comfortably pick-you up at 9/ 9.30 am at your place and drive the 70 kms of the Athens Riviera all the way to Cape Sounio, the Southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula. Along our way you will have the chance to admire all the must-sees of the Athens Riviera, such as the Kavouri peninsula, and take wonderful scenic pics.
On our way there, we will make few stops. First at the Arxelon Caretta Caretta Sea Turtles Rescue Center. There, kids will familiarize with those cute animals and have the chance to admire the work of the society in hosting and curing wonderful wounded Caretta Caretta Sea Turtles and possibly participate in some of the Society’s scheduled activities. It will also be a great chance for kids to learn about biology and marine life and raise their awareness on ecological issues and the values of volunteering.
Next we will move on to Vouliagmeni area, where we will enjoy a short walk on Faskomilia Hill, which features amazing views over the bay, the Saronic sea and islands. The kids will be entertained by witnessing the typical Mediterranean scrub and wildlife (birds and land turtles among them), and maybe pick some wild herbs, flowers and plants to bring back home and collect in an album. After that we will enter the Vouliagmenis Lake. An amazing natural formation, surrounded by imposing cliffs and with thermal waters that maintain a pleasantly warm temperature throughout the year, it will surely positively impress the kids.
But touring and swimming makes you hungry, and it will then be time to reach a local farm for lunch. Once there you will be offered a tour of the farm, which is a one-of-a-kind and follows permaculture principles. Then the kids and the parents if they wish, will actively take part in one of the many seasonal activities that the farm carries out. Depending on the season it can be olive picking, wild herbs collection and preparations with them, collecting tomatoes and making homemade sauce etc. Later you will be treated an al fresco lunch with organic food, with ingredients from the same farm (vegetables, olive oil, bread, free pasture eggs etc.).
Later in the afternoon we will head to Sounio where you will visit the majestic Temple of Poseidon (5th century BC). Cape Sounio is a spectacular place inhabited since the archaic times, where goddess Athens first and Poseidon God of the Seas later were worshiped. It was particularly relevant because of the rich silver mines in the area and its geographic and strategic position. You will be able to admire 16 original columns of the Poseidon Temple, the military walls, ancient roads and dwellings below the temple. The kids will be able to hear about many of the myths associated with the area, and have the chance to make some drawings inspired by the ancient ruins, the landscape and the sea.
Finally, if the weather is hot and we are on schedule and you not too tired, we will take you to a secluded beach away from the crowds where you will be able to enjoy the sun and the blue clean waters of the Aegean in total relax for a quick swim, before driving back to Athens after such an exciting day in contact with the Mediterranean nature.
