“They knew all the little paths and routes to exceptional views and places along a 20 something km route, and had me laughing and learning the whole way through. Such an amazing day, such amazing people. Not to miss.”
(Sami H., Oct. 2016)
To get to the starting point of the bike tour, we will pick you up at 8.30 am from your place in Athens. After a 60 min. approx. drive we will reach the hills surrounding the Marathon Lake. Once there, our tour/ bike leader(s) will give you some valuable info about the route and some advice for the less experienced, before getting started. The first leg of the route is a descent to the lake shore, on dirty gravel, very scenic and with a nice little church making for a brief stop. Next we will bike along the lake shore for few kms. Then we will take an easy road cutting through fields and cultivations, and start a moderately steep ascent to Kapandriti village (5 kms. approx.).
Those who do not feel like biking uphill can jump on the car/van at this point. While the rest of the group bikes its way to Kapandriti and to the next meeting point, Lazarides winery, the group in the car/ van will have the chance to rest and drink a refreshment. While waiting there will also be a chance to visit the interesting and atmospheric wine museum that takes you back to the roots of wine making in Greece and especially in Athens/ Attica region.
The last leg of the route is equally rewarding. Mostly descending, it’s a 10 kms. ride in the woods and next to a small gorge, all the way down to the NE Attica coast. Three stops are scheduled along the route for some rest and/ or some pics., but if the whole group is willing, there may be more or even less than that. The 4/5 hrs. ride will end in a very special place, Amfiareio ancient site, the biggest ancient Greek sanctuary of the vile god and hero of Argos Amfiaraos. Founded in the end of the 5th century BC it is built on the edge of a stream and amidst a pine forest. On the left bank are situated the formal buildings, the temple, the arcade, the altar, the theater, and on the right bank are the living quarters, including a hydraulic clock.
OPTIONAL (for 4 pax. and more)
After a short visit of the site, we will head to Lazarides winery, one of the most prestigious in Greece. There you will taste three of its very special wines plus a kind of balsamic vinegar along with some delicious bites. The tour will end with a light lunch with traditional Greek food, before making our way back to Athens (or any other place where you will stay).
The extra cost for this additional activity plus light lunch is € 30 pp.
The bike route is of average/high difficulty, mostly off-road on gravel, total duration being 4,5 hrs. approx.. There are few steep ascents but it’s mostly downhill. For those that do not want to ride the steepest leg, they can hop on the van, visit a Wine Museum and join the rest of the group for the last 10 kms. of scenic descending leg.
Starting point: 364 mts. altitude
End point: 153 mts.
Total ascent/ descent: 530/ 741 mts.
Program and price are subject to change depending on number of participants and special arrangements.
