XMAS and winter season in Athens

Lots of events for everybody!

From theatrical plays and ice skating, to fine wining and dining and Christmas shows, discover some of the most festive things to do in Athens this Christmas season.

Let’s celebrate Christmas at the Megaron, with a Cinderella as you have never seen before! From 21 to 29 December we are in awe of the famous classical ballet company of the Principality of Monaco in a most impressive version of Cinderella, our beloved childhood fairy tale! Founded more then 100 years ago, the Monte Carlo Ballet is regarded as one of the world’s leading ballets.

Christmas Theater

The Olympic Hall’s Christmas Theater holiday program kicks off the new year with the Franz Lehar Orchestra of Vienna and dancers from the Vienna Opera performing a selection of waltzes. Don’t miss this spectacle taking place in Athens 1-3 January!

Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?

“Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?” by Edward Albee, a modern classic is performed in our city 12 to 30 December, with English surtitles. For those not familiar with the plot; two couples and their relationships hit rock bottom. A long, wild, brutal night. Marriage is no longer sacred. A legendary play, forever associated with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton thanks to the film of the same name, is to be staged at the Onassis Stegi as a “living museum” of behaviours from decades past.

A Christmas Carol

The magic of Christmas comes to the National Theatre of Greece in a thrilling musical version of Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol by the dynamic young Greek director Giannis Moschos, who invites us into the world of dreams and imagination, revealing the true meaning of Christmas. The play is performed in Greek, with English subtitles available daily.

Leonardo da Vinci

Though not really Christmassy, a new and immersive exhibition worth visiting, ‘Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius’ allows visitors to explore the life and work of this great artist and inventor, 500 years after his death. Until 30 March 2019 masterpieces, inventions, codices, and drawings from the Renaissance master come to life in an experience that is simultaneously enchanting, entertaining and educational. The exhibition uses experiential SENSORY4 ™ technology, a unique system that combines multichannel motion graphics, cinema quality surround sound and up to forty high-definition projectors to transform an exhibition space into a dynamic and immersive experience.

Lycabettus Hill

Most probably you have already heard of Lycabettus hill, the highest peak of Athens, which overlooks the capital from 277 meters. Suitably it is considered as one of the most romantic places while it certainly stands out for its panoramic view of the beautiful city. The most beautiful images fill the eyes of every visitor, facing the Acropolis to Piraeus and the Saronic Gulf. At this point, Orizontes is one of the best restaurants in Athens. It is popular owing to its distinctive sophisticated service, high quality dishes, and the freshness of the ingredients. This Christmas Eve they will thrill visitors with an exceptional menu.

SNFCC Christmas World

If you feel a little more active, at the heart of the SNFCC Christmas World, situated on the Canal in front of the Agora, is the SNFCC Ice Rink. Until January 31, it will be welcoming ice-skaters of all ages. The ice rink will be open daily, from 10am until 10pm, weather permitting. Here you can enjoy festive shopping with spectacular intervals of great shows and countless interactive gigs for kids, where they can build the largest Christmas tree with LEGO® bricks, have their photograph taken inside the Grinch’s huge snowball or even sit on Santa’s throne!
